Carly

“So, he said that he needs time to figure it out?” Paige echoed, leaning against the kitchen counter. “Like, is that just with all the stuff with the college—his job?”

“I guess,” I said with a shrug. “I don’t know what else it would be about. I mean, he asked me to spend the night last night, and I was the one that left early this morning. A pregnancy is a life altering event, for the both of us.”

Paige nodded, giving me a strange look. “Have you thought about how this is going to affect your future, though? I know that you say you want to keep the baby, but what about that pending job offer for CBI?”

My heart sank at the mention—I had completely forgotten about the job, being so caught up in how Luke would react to the news. “I have no idea,” I groaned, my face falling to my hands. “That job would put me in L.A. or New York City—that’s almost a thousand miles away from where we are.”

“Exactly,” Paige said, letting out a sigh. “Do you think that Luke is going to want to be involved enough to keep you around here? And you’d be starting the job in January, while being six months pregnant.”

My stomach clenched at the thought. “I don’t think they can refuse to hire me because I’m pregnant,” I thought aloud. “I mean, surely they would still hire me.”

“But do you want that kind of high stress job while taking care of an infant? It just seems like a lot, Carly.” Paige was giving me the most sympathetic look, and it was making me feel that much worse about my predicament.

I guess Dr. Dean wasn’t the only one who was dealing with the repercussions of what had happened in his office. I’d just been too focused on what it could to do his career, not even thinking about mine. My mom hadn’t mentioned anything like that on the phone, either. Her only concern had been for how I was feeling, and if I had spoken with Luke about it all...

And she also had no idea that Luke was my professor.

Fuck.

“You really need to do some hard thinking about what you want, Carly,” Paige continued, reaching for her glass of water sitting on the counter. “I just think that you should be less concerned with what happens to Dr. Dean, and more concerned about what your future looks like. You need to have some sort of plan put together, because regardless of how he feels about you, you’re going to be a mother in nine months—and that’s going to bring a whole boat load of responsibilities on your plate.”

“I know, I know,” I groaned, running my fingers through my messy blonde hair. “I’ll figure it out—and I’ll figure out what he’s going to do, too. There might be a chance that he just wants to send me money or something.”

“I wouldn’t say no to that one,” my best friend snorted, a giggle escaping her lips.
